Sports referees bear significant responsibility: their decisions can decide victory or defeat, and they are also expected to prevent injuries to athletes. Their mistakes can have serious consequences, their liability is affected by the specific features of sport. Understanding liability risks is crucial for referees and injured parties, and also for sports associations when recruiting referees. Based on prior court rulings, the study provides a comprehensive analysis of German law regarding the duties of sports referees, their legal relationships, and their liability for 'erroneous' course of play as well as for physical injuries suffered by third parties. Football serves as an example, but its conclusions are transferable to other sports.
