Zusammenfassung

Zombies sind in den letzten Jahren omnipräsent: Sie erscheinen nicht nur in Filmen, sondern als crossmediales Phänomen auch in Games, Büchern und TV-Serien; sie werden als akademische Metapher und philosophische Denkfigur eingesetzt und dienen sinnbildlich der Verdeutlichung komplexer Abläufe in statistischen Modellen. Angesichts dessen stellt sich die Frage, durch welche Eigenschaften sich der Zombie auszeichnet und wie davon ausgehend dieser gegenwärtige Boom zu erklären ist.

Die Dissertation widmet sich der systematischen Untersuchung der Figur des Zombie und seiner diversen crossmedialen Modulationen, klärt deren Ursprünge und Entwicklungen sowie ihre Bedeutung in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart. Es zeigt sich: Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Zombie ist mehr als ein blutiges Horror-Vergnügen – sie kann gar wichtige Funktionen im Rahmen von Lebensbewältigung und Identitätsbildung übernehmen.
