Zusammenfassung

Das oft für abgeschlossen erklärte Zeitalter des Nationalismus ist noch längst nicht zu Ende. In den Jahren 1990-93 entstanden in Europa mehr Nationalstaaten als je zuvor in einem kurzen Zeitabschnitt: 14 hybride Ethnonationalstaaten und 3 fragile Bundesnationalstaaten. Von letzteren ist die Bundesrepublik Jugoslawien seither zerfallen, die anderen beiden sind durch ethnonationale Bewegungen gefährdet. Staats- und Ethnonationalismus gehen in jedem Land eigentümliche Verbindungen ein und lassen hier und da ein gestaffeltes Nationalbewusstsein zu, das auf multinationalen Föderalismus oder nationale Autonomie als Alternative zur nationalen Sezession abzielt.

In diesem Band werden von Autoren aus Ost und West Ergebnisse langjähriger Nationalismusforschung und neue Ansätze des Nationsverständnisses erörtert. Außerdem wird das Scheitern der multinationalen Staaten Sowjetunion, Jugoslawien, der teilnationalen DDR sowie voraussichtlich auch Bosnien-Herzegowinas analysiert. Nach dem Zusammenbruch der multinationalen Staaten und der polyethnischen Reiche einige Jahrzehnte zuvor wird abschließend gefragt, ob eine sich weiter integrierende Europäische Union in der Lage sein wird, eine angemessene Antwort auf den Nationalismus und die Nationalitätenproblematik zu finden.
