Zusammenfassung

Grundsätzliche Diskussionen über das „gute Leben“ sind selten geworden – heute erscheint es uns zeitgemäß, das „gute Leben“ als „Lebensqualität“ mit den Methoden der empirischen Sozialforschung zu untersuchen. Neuberger befasst sich in diesem Buch sowohl empirisch als auch theoretisch mit der Frage, welche Rolle die Beziehung zu Kindern und Enkeln für die Lebensqualität der Generation 50 plus in Europa spielt. Mithilfe quantitativer Daten aus 16 europäischen Ländern zeigt er, dass der „Nutzen“ von Kindern und Enkeln nicht nur von der Art der intergenerationalen Beziehungen, sondern auch vom sozialen Status der (Groß-)Eltern sowie von makroökonomischen Bedingungen abhängig ist.

Doch bleibt der Autor nicht bei quantitativen Analysen stehen. Er fragt auch nach den gesellschaftlichen Umständen, unter denen das Konzept „Lebensqualität“ überhaupt wissenschaftliche Geltung beanspruchen und vom „Nutzen“ von Kindern die Rede sein kann. So leistet Neuberger nicht nur einen innovativen Beitrag zur familiensoziologischen Forschung, sondern macht gleichzeitig die eigene Studie zum Objekt soziologischer Betrachtung und entwickelt Konzepte und Kategorien der Familiensoziologie kritisch weiter.
