Summary
Evil is centrally linked to being human - and has been a recurring theme since time immemorial: in myth, in fairy tales, in philosophy from the very beginning, here always seen and interpreted differently. Evil is the critical reproach to every optimistic image of man, at the same time the deep-seated thorn in the beautiful skin. This text sketches an overall picture of the phenomenon from its intellectual-historical beginnings to the present day; the focus is on various philosophical positions. A leading aspect is the confrontation with the human sciences: in their various attempts to explain the phenomenon, they run the risk of trivialising it, suppressing it, even falsifying it.
