Im Rahmen der beginnenden Erforschung europäischer Akteure widmet sich dieses Buch der mikrosoziologischen Tiefenanalyse einer politischen Teilelite innerhalb der europäischen Institutionen, der Positionselite im Europäischen Parlament. Dabei steht erstmals auch die wechselseitige Wahrnehmung der Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen von EU-Parlamentariern aus den alten und den neuen Mitgliedstaaten nach der EU-Erweiterung von 2004 im Mittelpunkt.
Ausgehend von einer breiten Rezeption klassischer und gegenwärtiger Literatur zur Elitenforschung und basierend auf einer qualitativen empirischen Untersuchung zeichnet das Buch ein detailliertes Bild der Heterogenität dieser europäischen Positionseliten, das dazu beitragen kann, die Dynamik des Laboratoriums Europa selbst genauer zu erfassen. Das reiche Interviewmaterial unterstützt die zentralen Thesen von der spezifischen Figuration einer europäischen Positionselite im EP sowie von der internen Heterogenität dieser Teilelite, bei durchaus wahrnehmbaren Übereinstimmungen. Das Interviewmaterial selbst bietet einen hoch interessanten Einblick in heute ablaufende Europäisierungsprozesse politischer Eliten.
