Summary
This thesis provides insights into Germany’s policy towards Israel as an integral part of the Federal Republic’s foreign policy identity. Drawing on a pragmatist perspective and the grounded theory approach, this study examines, on the basis of official government discourse, how Israel’s security is framed in two periods of crisis (2006–2009 and 2023–2024) and what rules for action underpin these narratives. The comparison demonstrates the extent to which German policy towards Israel oscillates between continuity and change, and the significance that international crises might have for these developments. The study is aimed at readers with an interest in German foreign policy and international relations.
