Summary

This book offers insights into the complex networks and power structures of the British Empire by illuminating the administration of Indian contract labour. It analyses the administrative interdependencies between London and the colonies, showing the role of personal relationships and the flexibility of the colonial administration. By applying the methodology of the New Imperial History (NIH) in the area of ‘Imperial Careers’ and a comprehensive network analysis, the interactions between the imperial centre and the periphery are revealed. With a methodological approach that combines qualitative archival research and quantitative analysis, the book offers well-founded insights into the functioning of imperial power in the British Empire.
