Summary

This study offers an overview of a pivotal phase between Middle and Neoplatonism by analyzing the conception of demiurgy in Numenius and Plotinus. Numenius is the first Platonist to explicitly separate the Demiurge from the First Principle—an idea that Plotinus adopts and radicalizes. In both thinkers, the reflection on demiurgy opens up new perspectives: the demiurgic function, no longer tied to the One/Good, unfolds across multiple levels of reality and distinct functions. This perspective characterizes Platonism in the 2nd–3rd centuries CE and lays the groundwork for a broader inquiry into the issues of causality and the generation of the universe.
