Just a few years ago, all parties represented in the Bundestag today except the CDU included in their party or election programs the introduction of referendums at the federal level. This was in line with what a large majority of citizens expressly requested. In the meantime, the winds of public opinion have shifted. Above all, the Brexit vote by the British and the successes of populist politicians and parties in many countries have aroused new skepticism as to whether factual political decisions can really be left to "the people." What are we to make of this? Are we dealing with a return to realism or with a return of old, anti-democratic prejudices? The book explores these questions and shows that the opportunities and risks of direct democracy cannot be assessed without a close look at how it is implemented.
