This volume makes a case for examining problems relating to time and temporality from a philosophical perspective in which analyses of the nature of human life are combined with ethical questions. The focus is not on what time is or whether it exists at all, but rather on a philosophical discussion of the existential difficulties arising from fundamental temporal aspects of human life. This leads us to speak of a ‘new philosophy of existence’. Three assumptions guide this ‘new’ philosophy of existence. Firstly, we assume that time is not merely a factor determining human life from the outside, but that our lives themselves are essentially temporal phenomena. Secondly, we believe that the temporality which shapes our lives brings with it its own challenges. And thirdly, we consider it promising, in the light of an ethics of the good life, to ask how these challenges can be overcome without standing in the way of a successful life. The essays thus deal, amongst other things, with finitude and life stages, with memory and the duration of emotions, with life plans and what we leave behind, with forgiveness, having children, and the question of what makes a life spanning time a coherent whole.
