Summary
Hannah Arendt's entire thinking is based on what she herself called ‘administrative mass murder’: the bureaucratically organised extermination of the Jewish people by the Nazi regime. ‘This ought to never have happened,’ she said and wrote on various occasions. Starting from this break with everything that had come to be regarded as the supposedly unavoidable foundations of Western civilisation, she developed her thoughts on politics. These are based on an ethics that the philosopher presupposed rather than specifically addressed. 20 years after first having dealt with Arendt's ethics in his 2005 book ‘Denkbarer Holocaust’, Peter Trawny returns to this core of her thinking to examine it under the changed conditions of our current political situation. The result is that Arendt's explicitly provocative thinking, which was not always clearly understood, remains highly relevant today. Recognising that administrative mass murder can be interpreted not so much as the result of a criminal ideology, but rather as a consequence of the fundamental conditions of modern society, remains the ultimate imposition for her. Nevertheless, Arendt is convinced that genuine political change can only come about if one exposes oneself to this imposition.
