Summary
"If, like the author, you have been thinking along the lines of German idealism for years, you want to know what the relationship between theory and practical behaviour is like in general. The modern, instrumentalist versions of empiricism do not provide any satisfactory information on this. What is the ultimate goal of knowledge? Does it have its own goal and, in relation to this, its own validity? Or is its goal at best a positing of practical reason, at worst the riddle of a blind destiny? If one does not prefer to make these questions superfluous by means of a sufficiently reduced concept of philosophy, then one can get no better advice for them in the environs of pragmatism than from Peirce." In his 1969 habilitation thesis, Hans Friedrich Fulda analyses the epistemological logic of late Peirce. In doing so, he sharply distinguishes his own take on Peirce from instrumentalist and transcendental-logical interpretations of Peirce, such as those advocated by Habermas and Apel. The essay is published here for the first time, supplemented by the only two essays in which Fulda returned to Peirce, and an introduction by the editor.
