Zusammenfassung

Eisenbahnen verkehren über politische Grenzen wie andere Verkehrsmittel auch. Das Buch untersucht anhand von drei Fallstudien, wie sich gemeinsame Vorstellungen für den Bahnverkehr entwickelten - oder auch nicht entwickelten. Themen sind Angebotskonzepte, Tarife und Infrastruktur als zentrale Gestaltungsbereiche des Bahnverkehrs mit Beispielen des späten 19. Jahrhunderts und der Zeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg.

An Grenzen treffen oft unterschiedliche politische wie planerische Ziele aufeinander. Gerade auf der Schiene ist jedoch besonders viel Abstimmung erforderlich, um auch für internationale Verkehre ein gutes Angebot machen zu können. Dabei geht es nicht nur um kompatible technische Standards, sondern es ist auch eine Abstimmung von Ideen und Konzepten erforderlich.

Auch in der Gegenwart ist zu erleben, wie schwer sich Schritte (zurück) zu einem „europäischen“ Bahnsystem im Widerstreit mit technischer Komplexität, zunehmender Konkurrenz und unterschiedlichen Ideen umsetzen lassen.
