Zusammenfassung
Das Buch gibt detaillierten Einblick in die psychologische Tiefenstruktur der chinesischen Gesellschaft und ihre Implikationen für die sozio-politische Handlungsbereitschaft und -fähigkeit sozialer Akteure. Perzeptionen sozialer Mobilität und Kohäsion stehen im Zentrum einer Gesellschaftstypologie, welche Spiegelbild von Chinas spezifischem Weg der Modernisierung ist. Das Buch fügt sich ein in die Debatte um Konvergenz oder Divergenz unterschiedlicher Kulturen und damit letztlich auch politischer Systeme. Am Beispiel China belegt es schlüssig das Argument kultureller Divergenz im Sinne von Shmuel Eisenstadts Konzept der „Multiple Modernities.“ Es stützt sich in erster Linie auf die qualitative Analyse semi-narrativer Interviews mit Angehörigen verschiedener Gesellschaftsschichten in Peking, Xi’an und Wenzhou. Erkenntnisse aus quantitativen Studien ordnen die Ergebnisse in einen breiteren Kontext ein. Das Buch richtet sich an Soziologen/innen, Politologen/innen und Sinologen/innen.
