Zusammenfassung
Der transnationale Schwerpunkt dieses Sammelbandes zum grenzüberschreitenden Waren-, Kapital- und Menschenverkehr sowie zu den Institutionen der Wirtschaft am Rhein ergänzt existierendes Wissen zum Thema nationale und lokale Geschichte mit neuen Einblicken. Sowohl die Geschichte der Zentralkommission für die Rheinschifffahrt als auch Beiträge zu Umweltfragen zeigen auf, dass die zahlreichen Probleme der Rheinuferstaaten nur mit internationaler und transnationaler Zusammenarbeit gelöst werden konnten und bis heute können. Als frühes Beispiel für die transnationale Zusammenarbeit ist die Zentralkommission für die Rheinschifffahrt eine der institutionellen Gründe für die nachhaltige und erfolgreiche Wirtschaftsentwicklung der Region. Andererseits spielten die Privatwirtschaft, multinationale Konzerne und Unternehmer eine tragende Rolle in sowohl der Wirtschaftsentwicklung am Rhein als auch in der Etablierung transnationaler Wechselwirkungen zwischen seinen Kernregionen. Trotz Kriegen und einer nationalistischer Wirtschaftspolitiken schufen diese privaten Akteure eine nachhaltige und grenzüberschreitende Wirtschaftsregion.
