Stehen direkte Demokratie und Parlamentarismus wirklich auf Kriegsfuß? Wie schlagen sich Regierungsparteien in Volksabstimmungen? Wer lacht nach oppositionellen Referendumserfolgen wirklich am besten?

Der Band beantwortet diese Fragen und bietet darüber hinaus ein neuartiges Analysekonzept, das direktdemokratische Verfahren und ihre Anwendung erstmals umfassend quantifizierbar und länderübergreifend vergleichbar macht. Durch die Unterscheidung zwischen einem gouvernementalen und oppositionellen Einsatz gelingt die Integration der direkten Demokratie in die Demokratietypologie von Arend Lijphart.

In einer Untersuchung von 15 EU-Staaten (Italien, Irland, Dänemark, Frankreich, Portugal, Schweden, Malta; Slowenien, Litauen, Slowakei, Lettland, Ungarn, Polen, Rumänien, Estland) werden klare Zusammenhänge zwischen gouvernementaler Direktdemokratie und Mehrheitsdemokratie sowie oppositioneller Direktdemokratie und Konsensdemokratie hergestellt. Die detaillierten Länderstudien und die akribische Darstellung von 183 Volksabstimmungen der Jahre 1990 bis 2012 machen den Band zu einem unerlässlichen Nachschlagewerk für alle Interessierten.
