Summary

This volume contains 13 contributions on Theodor Fontane's (1819–1898) work. On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his birth, an international conference at the University of Szeged sought to redefine his methods of constructing poetic worlds and to examine their organization. The focus will be on exemplary analyses that illustrate Fontane's understanding of realism, perception and representation of landscape, publishing practice, creative processes, his narrative and construction techniques and some of his motifs. New perspectives on „Before the Storm“, „The Stechlin“, „Effi Briest“, „Grete Minde“, „Chess of Wuthenow“, „Under the Pear Tree“, „My Childhood“, „Wanderings through the Mark Brandenburg“, „Count Petöfy“ and „Cécile“ are the result.
