At precisely the moment of greatest need, when Athens became a polis founded by Saturn, the Socrates of tradition – the Socrates of superlatives – fails to appear. His withdrawal into the private sphere, his abandonment oft he agora, signifies not only the negation of the dialogical character of his philosophical inquiry, but also the renunciation of his role as an‚ Athenian ciitzien: entirely absent is the Socrates oft he Apology; absent, too, is his duty to obey Got rather than men, his mission as a bad conscience oft he polis, his claim tob e the measure of all things. This is not the Socrates who – more than other figures who have appeared on the political stage – deserves the epithet „the Great.“
