Summary

The existence of multiple personalities is repeatedly doubted, although dissociative identity disorder (DIS) is one of the most serious trauma-related disorders. The soul divides itself into several identities – an ingenious trick of the brain.The book uses case studies to explain the causes – usually the worst sexualised violence in early childhood – and symptoms of DIS and traces the recurring controversy surrounding the diagnosis. Numerous studies by renowned scientists attempt to understand dissociative identity disorder, while the justice system reaches its limits in clarifying the fragmented memories of those affected. Liz Wieskerstrauch is an award-winning author who has made several documentary films about multiple personalities for ARD and ZDF/ARTE and wrote the novel Lucy's Diamonds (2020). In her new book, Geteilte Persönlichkeiten (“Divided Personalities”), she summarises the results of her numerous encounters with those affected and her years of research.
