Summary

Visuals are ubiquitous in politics. They frame the way viewers understand issues and events and they affect candidate evaluations and even voting behaviour. Nevertheless, little is known about the strategic use of visuals in election campaigns. This book investigates the visual communication strategies of political parties and candidates from both a longitudinal and a comparative perspective. It analyses tools such as campaign posters and social media profiles and demonstrates the relevance of visuals in Western democracies. ‘Visual Politics’ is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as scholars and those interested in the role of visuals in election campaigns such as campaign strategists, parties, candidates and journalists.
