Das Strafrecht zielt im Rahmen seiner Funktion auf bestimmte Zwecke. Der Sammelband enthält hierzu Beiträge von ausgewiesenen Fachleuten aus der Rechtsphilosophie, der Strafrechtstheorie, der Kriminologie und der Sanktionsforschung. Im theoretischen Teil wird die Beziehung zwischen Strafrecht und Politik vertieft erörtert, während im internationalen/interdisziplinären Teil Themen wie EU und internationales Strafrecht, organisierte Kriminalität, Strafzumessung, Strafvollzug und Strafrecht in Übergangslagen behandelt werden. Der rechtsvergleichende Teil setzt sich mit Aspekten auseinander, die den Strafanwendungsdiskurs betreffen, wie die Strafaussetzung zur Bewährung, die lebenslange Freiheitsstrafe und Probleme spezifischer Sanktionen, wie die Einziehung.
