Summary

Otto Hintze (1861–1940), the most important German historian of the first half of the 20th century, devoted himself intensively to the modern state, its history and anatomy, its constitution, administration, and geopolitical situation. On this basis, referring to Max Weber’s sociological methods and findings, he dealt with the theories of the state as they were developed in constitutional law, sociology, and historiography in the early 20th century. The surgical precision of his historical-sociological perspective is still impressive today. His sociology of the state is groundbreaking basic research, but also a passionate analysis of the fate of the contemporary German state. His global historical perspective and his sober analysis of the power-political foundations of the European state system make him a highly topical author.
