Summary

How have stereotypes and censorship shaped public acceptance of queer identities? Isabelle Wiermann analyses the portrayal of LGBTQIA+ characters in US films and series, including Disney classics, and compares this with society's perception of queerness. In a three-part analysis, the author examines the historical context, the relationship between queerness and criminality, and the phenomenon of queercoding. Using the Vito Russo Test as an analytical tool, the author takes a close look at queercoded characters and shows which social norms resonate in their portrayal. The work offers valuable insights into the significance of queer visibility and the power of narrative.
