Summary

In the last two decades, the number of new co-operatives has risen sharply, particularly outside the traditional sectors. Financial bottlenecks and demographic change have contributed to cooperatives increasingly becoming the focus of local authorities. From a business management perspective, Simon Blome-Drees analyses whether and to what extent this legal and economic form is suitable for the management of municipal infrastructures, using the example of the transfer of public swimming pools to sports cooperatives. Can (sports) co-operatives represent innovative and promising ways of exploiting existing scope for efficiency and tapping into additional sources of funding?
