Summary

Although requiring nursing care is considered a technical term and is used in nursing practice and nursing science contexts, a theory that could explain and predict the phenomenon in a scientifically sound manner is lacking. Equating the need for nursing care with the symptoms that necessitate it either dilutes or misjudges the complex nature of such a situation. This study is concerned with basic research on the need for nursing care. Using the facet theory and multidimensional scaling, the author designs a structural hypothesis based on the expertise of nursing professionals and on theories from different disciplines. This produces robust results for the development of theories on the need for nursing care.
