Summary

The Logic of Sense (1969) is the book in which Deleuze most profoundly deals with phenomenology. While research to date has primarily emphasised his critical distance from Husserl and Heidegger, a closer look reveals that Deleuze's thinking is surprisingly intertwined with developments in French phenomenology since the 1960s. This book attempts to decipher Deleuze's complex and difficult text and place it in its historical and conceptual context. In doing so, it becomes apparent that Logic of Sense takes up similar intellectual currents as did the phenomenological movement after Sartre and Merleau-Ponty. The study follows these traces and reconstructs Deleuze's early philosophy of meaning and event in light of the developments that led phenomenology itself into a new phase. This reveals an unexpected picture: Deleuze appears not as an opponent, but as a possible ally of a renewed phenomenology. When Michel Foucault prophesied that the 21st century would be Deleuzian, this, as this book shows, may also apply to phenomenology.
