What we eat and drink leaves traces in our bodies. What we throw away may slip from our sight, but it remains part of material cycles, often in harmful ways. What happens in the virtual space of digital services depends on fiber optic cables and highly energy-intensive server farms. In other words: consumption has not only a symbolic and social dimension, but a material one as well. This volume contributes to advancing the still-hesitant adoption of the "material turn" in consumer research—both as a fundamental theoretical perspective on consumption as a whole and regarding the variety of specific issues associated with it.
