This volume explores the phenomenon of German philhellenism in the diversity of its cultural and epistemological dimensions. It aims to show how the ‘myth’ of Greekness conceals the endeavor to critically rethink German identity by determining its relationship to its Greek origins. The essays collected in this volume, covering a period from the middle of the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century, address the impact of German philhellenism on philology, philosophy, art history, archaeology and historiography.
