Der Autor wählt einen innovativen quantitativen Ansatz zur Frage der Machtverteilung zwischen Staaten. Die Vorhersagekraft unterschiedlicher Theorien der Internationalen Beziehungen wird dabei anhand des Erfolgs und Misserfolgs 21 westlicher Staaten in kompetitiven Wahlen innerhalb der Vereinten Nationen für den Zeitraum zwischen 1990 und 2006 statistisch analysiert. Die hieraus hervorgehende Panelanalyse ergibt, dass eine auf militärischer und wirtschaftlicher Macht basierende neorealistische Faktorvariable die zu beobachtende Varianz am besten zu erklären vermag. Auch dem Amtsbonuseffekt lässt sich eine wichtige Rolle zuweisen.
