How can the "foolish" and "mad" moral philosopher La Mettrie be explained? Manfred Starke's starting point is La Mettrie's torn nature: in philosophical terms between his pessimistic, sceptical and positive, constructive tendencies, in political terms between his liberal-anarchist and conservative traits. Above all, his contradictory answers to the central question of the Enlightenment are decisive for this interpretation: Is it possible to "educate" people in the spirit of the Enlightenment? If so, to what degree can the state and politics committed to political realism consecrate themselves to this "idealistic" task at all?
