Zusammenfassung

Wenige Fragen wurden in Bezug auf Indien in den letzten Jahren so ausführlich behandelt wie die Lage der Frauen. Zwischen mächtiger Premierministerin und unterdrückten Näherinnen changiert ihr Bild in der westlichen Rezeption.

Die vorliegende Studie untersucht, welche „Freiheiten“ weiblichen Figuren im Bollywoodfilm zugestanden werden. Dabei werden Alltagsphänomene wie die Partnerwahl oder die Bewegungsfreiheit ins Zentrum gestellt und historisch verortet.

Ist der populäre Film ein Medium der Tradition, wie häufig behauptet, oder haben sich die Protagonistinnen längst emanzipiert? Um diese Frage beantworten zu können, wurden kommerziell erfolgreiche Filme aus den Jahren 2000-2009 untersucht.
