Zusammenfassung
Die Nizari-Ismailiten gehören zu den muslimischen Gemeinschaften, die sich am intensivsten in der akademischen Ausbildung und Wissensproduktion in den Islam- und Geisteswissenschaften engagieren. Zu diesem Zweck betreiben sie zwei akademische Institutionen in London: das Institute of Ismaili Studies und das Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations.
Die vorliegende Studie untersucht im Rückgriff auf religions- und wissenssoziologische Ansätze den akademischen Diskurs der beiden Institute und die religiösen Ausrichtungen innerhalb ihrer internationalen Studentenschaft. Dabei wird deutlich, dass sich die Gemeinschaft vorwiegend mit drei Themenbereichen auseinandersetzt: dem Verhältnis zur säkularen Moderne, zu den Hauptströmungen des Islam und zu sich selbst. Der ismailitische Umgang mit dieser dreifachen Herausforderung lässt sich als ein Prozess der reflexiven Modernisierung verstehen, in dem der Islam als Kultur anstatt als Religion neu konzeptualisiert und Ungewissheit in religiöser Subjektivität verinnerlicht wird.
