Zusammenfassung
Als zuvor übergangenes Modell für eine Neugestaltung des britischen Empires zog antike griechische Kolonisation im Lauf des 19. Jahrhunderts zahlreiche Akteure an: Wissenschaftler und Politiker, Administratoren und Militärs, Journalisten und anonym gebliebene Kommentatoren bedienten sich der innovativen historischen Vorlage und warben für eine exklusive Föderation des viktorianischen Imperiums. Das Innovative des Modells zeigte sich darin, imperiale Herrschaft und koloniale Autonomie durch eine föderale Organisation verknüpfen zu können. Seine Exklusivität speiste sich aus der Maßgabe, dieses Vorhaben imperialer Reform auf Großbritannien und die Siedlerkolonien in Kanada, Australien, Neuseeland und Südafrika zu beschränken.
