Zusammenfassung

Um das ambivalente Verhältnis zwischen den USA und den UN besser verstehen zu können, bedarf es der Untersuchung der Rolle des Ständigen Vertreters der USA bei den UN in New York. Diese Arbeit zeigt, dass die Rolle des US-amerikanischen UN-Botschafters eine hohe Relevanz hat. Je nach Persönlichkeit, Denken, Handeln bei außenpolitischen Entscheidungsprozessen sowie Agieren innerhalb der Vereinten Nationen kann der Botschafter eine wichtige Rolle als Vermittler zwischen US-amerikanischen Interessen und jenen der internationalen Gemeinschaft einnehmen. Anhand der Politischen Psychologie und Psychobiografie, des Sozialkonstruktivismus sowie des Multilateralismus und der multilateralen Diplomatie wird der Ständige Vertreter in unterschiedliche theoretische Ausgangsbedingungen und Grundannahmen eingeordnet. Eine Datensammlung über alle bisherigen US-Botschafter bei den UN in New York seit 1945 stellt das empirische Material dar.
