Maritime Sicherheit ist ein global vernetztes System, das sowohl für Binnen- als auch für Küstenstaaten von unmittelbarer Bedeutung ist. Während sich die westliche Forschung häufig auf den Nordatlantik und Europa konzentriert, werden maritime Herausforderungen in Südamerika oft weniger beachtet.Die sicherheitspolitischen Probleme Südamerikas wie Drogenschmuggel, illegale Fischerei und unterfinanzierte Marinen, wirken jedoch weit über den Kontinent hinaus und haben Folgen für Europa und die Welt.
