Zusammenfassung

Demokratien in Europa geraten unter Druck – vor allem durch schleichende Erosion demokratischer Normen, Institutionen und Verfahren. In diesem Band werden die politischen Ursachen, Mechanismen und Folgen des demokratischen Rückschritts in 15 europäischen Ländern analysiert, von Westeuropa bis zum Westbalkan. Neben Fallstudien erarbeitet der Band vergleichende Analysen, die Muster demokratischer Erosion sichtbar machen. Die Beiträge thematisieren institutionelle Schwächungen ebenso wie populistische Narrative, unvollständige Demokratisierungsprozesse und das Erstarken der Exekutive. Die Problemdiagnose bildet dabei nur den Anfang. Konkrete Gegenmaßnahmen auf staatlicher, europäischer und zivilgesellschaftlicher Ebene werden aufgezeigt.
