Zusammenfassung

Das Hauptziel dieses Buches ist der Nachweis, dass Porphyrios in De abstinentia die moralische Sphäre auf harmlose Lebewesen ausdehnt. Miira Tuominen argumentiert, dass Porphyrios in Bezug auf das Wesen der Gerechtigkeit zwar an Platoniker, Stoiker und Theophrast anknüpft, aber einen originellen Begriff von Gerechtigkeit entwickelt, der sie auch auf äußere Handlungen überträgt. Als Attribut von Handlungen besteht die Gerechtigkeit darin, harmlose Lebewesen, einschließlich Tiere und Pflanzen, nicht zu schädigen. Porphyrios’ Darstellung ist mit seiner Polemik mit den Gegnern des Vegetarismus und seinen Zitaten von anderen Autoren verwoben. Indem es diese Verwicklungen entschlüsselt, zeigt dieses Buch die überraschende Modernität seiner Diskussionen.
