Dieser Band enthält Beiträge über Provinztheater des 19. Jahrhunderts und ihre Bedeutung für lokale Gemeinschaften. Kleinere Theater wurden bis vor Kurzem nur selten zum Gegenstand der Forschung. Unser heutiges Bild von Theatern des 19. Jahrhunderts ist von Quellen zu großen Spielstätten in europäischen Metropolen geprägt, die nur kleinen Eliten zugänglich waren. Provinztheater waren jedoch bedeutende soziokulturelle Räume, in denen sich die Bevölkerung treffen konnte, Informationen ausgetauscht wurden und sich die öffentliche Meinung bildete. Sie prägten Ideen und soziale Netzwerke, ihre Spielpläne spiegelten laufende Debatten und Entwicklungen wider, und sie können somit als Zentren lokaler Gemeinschaften gesehen werden.
