Zusammenfassung

Wie kaum ein anderer Konfliktfall belastet der georgisch-abchasische Konflikt die Entwicklungschancen einer ganzen Region und geht damit weit über den eigentlichen Widerspruch zwischen den beiden Extrempositionen – Selbstbestimmung versus territoriale Integrität – hinaus.

Der Autor geht in diesem Werk zunächst auf die Wurzeln des Konflikts ein und führt selbige einer kontextuellen Analyse zu. Wesentliches Augenmerk wird hierbei der sowjetischen Nationalitätenpolitik gewidmet, die in diesem Konflikt nicht nur die Handlungsoptionen der Parteien radikal minimierte: Sie muss als Katalysator der ethnischen Mobilisierung der späten 1980er Jahre verstanden werden.

Vor allem nimmt der Autor eine rechtliche Bewertung der tragischen Geschehnisse des Konflikts um Abchasien vor, die auch die problematische Rolle Russlands einer kritischen Würdigung zuführt. Insbesondere aber wird in diesem Werk die potentiell wichtige Rolle der EU nicht nur beschrieben, sondern auch grundsätzlich gefordert.
