Summary
Erstmals werden die vielfältigen Wechselwirkungen zwischen bewaffneten Konflikten und den menschlichen und natürlichen Umwelten zugleich geschichts- und sozialwissenschaftlich analysiert. Haben die meisten bisherigen Forschungen dieses Thema vor allem mit Blick auf Umweltzerstörungen durch Kriegshandlungen oder durch Aufrüstung schon in Friedenszeiten behandelt, so geht diese Veröffentlichung einen Schritt weiter. Daher wird der historische Wandel dieser komplexen Wechselbeziehung an konkreten Beispielen sichtbar gemacht: vom Zweiten Weltkrieg in Europa und Asien über den klassischen Stellvertreterkrieg in Vietnam bis zu den aktuellen asymmetrischen Kriegen in Südasien. Dabei stehen zugleich systematische Fragestellungen im Mittelpunkt: Wie beeinflussen Umwelten bewaffnete Konflikte? Wie verändern Kriege Umwelten? Und wie entstehen komplette „Kriegslandschaften“ (warscapes), in denen Krieg und Militarisierung die Beziehungen zwischen Menschen und Umwelten nachhaltig verändern.
