Summary

Who is studying Islamic Studies in Germany today – and why? In this first nationwide survey, over 400 students of Islamic Studies provide information about their study motivation, career goals and views on Islam. Germany's future experts on Islam can thus be described more closely for the first time. The study demonstrates the importance of personal convictions and presuppositions in the humanities, and how these become apparent in relation to Islam. The survey was inspired by ongoing disputes over the purpose of German Islamic Studies and the appropriate attitude towards Islam within the discipline. The author holds an MA in Islamic Studies and is doing her doctorate on the consequences of the ISIS period in Northern Iraq.
