Summary

Tradition has identified verse B8.5 DK of Parmenides’ poem as the first expression of the concept of timeless eternity. However, over the course of the twentieth century, a growing number of scholars have questioned the textual and historical accuracy of this interpretation, proposing instead to read verse B8.5 as evidence of perpetuity, which is precisely the opposite of timelessness. This study seeks to take stock of the debate on the interpretation of time in Parmenides, offering a third way to interpret it that overcomes the deadlock in contemporary discussions.
