[»Von der Schuld der Väter wie von unserer eigenen«. The »Darmstadt Word« of 1947 and the Challenges for Church and Society today] The »Word of the Brotherly Council of the Protestant Church in Germany on the Political Path of our People« of August 8, 1947, was the first to self-critically name the political co-responsibility of the Protestant churches for the rise of National Socialism. Efforts were made to provide concrete analyses of where a decisive change in thinking was necessary. The »Darmstadt Word«, drafted by Hans Joachim Iwand, was controversial from the outset. Although it was never officially adopted, it had a considerable impact. This volume brings together essays on the formation, content and reception of the Darmstadt Word. It asks what role confessions of guilt can play in society and in which problem constellations we must speak of guilt today – the guilt of the »fathers« as well as our own.
