Families provide values, support and opportunities. Families experiencing poverty may need additional help. The author participated as an observer in the everyday life of a family centre. She analysed the scope for action and the interactions of the professionals and examined the extent to which these can enable social participation, especially for families affected by poverty. Her analysis shows that targeted measures and active behaviour on the part of professionals have a significant influence on opportunities for social participation. At the same time, it illustrates how family centres with low-threshold and holistic working methods can act as important actors in social work..
