Language and music – it is one of the oldest discourses in music history. A climax of this debate was reached in the friendship between the composer Luciano Berio and the philosopher Umberto Eco in the 1960s, which is the focus of this book. It not only tells the story of a lifelong friendship, but also of a confrontation with the linguistic theorems of Ferdinand de Saussure and the literary work of James Joyce. But was this dialogue only characterized by consensus? Martin Link studied musicology and philosophy at the University of Muenster.
