What fascinates us about works of art that incorporate texts into their imagery or depict human figures writing, reading, or looking at writing? This popular motif already appears on Egyptian statues, drinking bowls from Greece, frescoes from Rome and is widespread in Christian art. Representations of the Annunciation scene with Mary reading a book, which has not been handed down biblically, play a special role. Starting from questions about the relationship between writing and visual art, Werner Sollors takes a closer look at many works of art in his illustrated essay and comes to surprising conclusions.
