Summary
Why should we take interest in that which doesn't concern us? Where does the growing concern for the private sphere originate? Artistic practices of the 1990s act within this zone of tension when they reproduce private experiences candor or even demonstrate »live«: Wolfgang Tillmans has photographed intimate scenes of his circle of friends since 1990, Félix González-Torres appeared on New York billboards with a close-up of his bed in 1992, and Elke Krystufek masturbated at the Kunsthalle Wien in 1994. Against the background of current theoretical reconceptualization of the »private«, which debates the nonetheless inseparable relevance to its moving boundary with the public realm, Elena Zanichelli explores artistic practices of visualizing that sphere which must in fact remain concealed and autonomy and freedom at once promised and regulated.
