What role do materials and material processes, materiality and immateriality play in contemporary art? How are materials contextualized in spaces by artists and which apparatuses are employed for their exhibition? What happens when in contemporary art, traditional, eternal, classical, analog materials are complemented by ephemeral, unstable, `poor', trivial, everyday, digital materials? In a critical confrontation with these questions, this volume brings together essays from the perspectives of art, art pedagogy, aesthetics and art history. They show how artistic action is stimulated by the critical confrontation with specific materialities and in this way, enable insights into various material discourses.
