Summary

[Transitional Theology and theological Wolffianism. New Perspectives on the Beginning of Protestant Enlightenment Theology] This anthology is dedicated to a hitherto little-researched phase of Protestant church history and theological history: the early theological Enlightenment with its prominent formations of Übergangstheologie and theological Wolffianism. To this end, historiographical and terminological problems, protagonists, themes and effects of the early Enlightenment theology are examined. In Übergangstheologie and theological Wolffianism, the doctrines of the confessional orthodoxies were combined with the impulses of Pietism and the early Enlightenment to form an exciting and stimulating mélange. In contrast to controversial debates of the past, a new overall perspective is emerging that allows the historical concepts of Übergangstheologie, eclecticism (Eklektik), Wolffianism, and early Enlightenment to be used fruitfully side by side in a non-essentialist way.
